I am new to gps devices in general and so far hate both I've tried -- neither Garmin nor TomTom will allow you to enter your own custom route. I am trying to make one of them, at least, work for me by using RouteConverter. The problem I'm seeing is that 1) RouteConverter re-orders points when I download the url from Google and then 2) totally re-orders them when I convert to .gpx, so when it gets to my Garmin the points are all scrambled, and I need to re-order them manually. Not good at 1:00 AM! Please advise, thanks. I'm on a Mac running 10.6, upgrading soon to 10.7. Thanks.

It might not help you, but I've bought my TomTom Rider exactly for that use case.

Please describe in great detail and with all the data, URLs and screenshots you can put into it what I have to do to reproduce the issue you're experiencing. Note that if you want to upload files to the forum use ZIP archives.

Christian, thanks for your reply. I've given you a screenshot (oh -- can't find a place to upload it, sorry) where one point is out of order at the bottom -- it belongs much further up -- but I've downloaded other routes where whole sections were in the wrong spot. Yesterday, once I converted the route to gpx format and uploaded it to the Garmin, the whole route was scrambled and had to be re-ordered manually -- very time consuming! -- although all the points were there. Not fun at 1:00 am when you need to get up early the next day. Your help is appreciated since your program seems to be the only way I can get my own preferred routes on to my GPS device. Frankly I am astonished that not a single one of them gives you the option of doing this directly with their own software. What are they thinking?

Choose "Browse..." and "Add Attachment" below.

That's a known issue of the Google Maps KML export.

That's not a proof that RouteConverter scrambled the positions, could be the Garmin device, too.

I know what you mean

Maybe nothing. Maybe "consumers are buying my devices anyway"? Maybe they're good device makers but suck at PC software - you can observe that pattern "good HW, lousy SW" with cameras, mobiles, plug-in cards
Anyway: to help, I need much more detailed information. Currently I can only guess, what's going wrong and there is no hint that RouteConverter is the problem. Christian, both my husband and myself have looked at this page top to bottom and can't find any link/button for "browse" and "add attachment." I'm using Firefox on a Mac, just upgraded to OS 10.7. I am not able to get my route from google maps to Route Converter at all now (last week I could) -- I saved my route to "my places" and when I re-access it and drag the url to Route Converter, all I get is the start and the end points, whether I have it set for "waypoints" or "route". I've tried sending to my email and drag/drop, but that doesnt work at all. Can't cut and paste either. Is there some kind of manual for Route Converter so I can figure out what is going on?

It's visible when you create a posting

Have a look at the Supports multiple position lists per file part of the RouteConverter tour. Your route is in a second position list.

Yes, read the tour, then the features and then the manual.

Christian, I have replied to your "support" email through my .mac email. I've included screenshots (including of this page, to show you there's no "browse" or "upload" buttons). I switched to Chrome b/c I saw that's what you are using. Totally unable to get the route I want from google -- although the alternative I've created appears in my browser -- on the map and in the driving directions -- when I drag the url the "google preferred" route (the one I rejected) is what appears. I tried saving my route to "my places", but when I drop that url into route converter, only the start and destination points appear. I'm happy to actually pay for your software if I can just get it to work.

The browser doesn't matter. You need to hit "Post Reply" first and the look below the text box you're typing.

Your screenshots look great. And RouteConverter does what it's supposed to do.
If you just get two positions, you need to select the other, the second position list. Select the position list combo box and choose the other entry and you see a long list of directions.
Sometimes Google Maps adds a waypoint with weird coordinates as the
last waypoint. Just delete it.

If all the points were completely out of order and needed to be re-ordered manually, you need to find a format that your Garmin interprets correctly without scrambling the positions. I'm sorry I can't be more precise because I don't own a Garmin device and I don't know what you're doing but I and tens of thousands of users can assure you that RouteConverter typically does the right thing.
