Is it possible to save the map seen on the screen as .jpg or an other picture format?

No. This has been requested several times from users. The Google Static Maps-API could be an answer to that.

I'd welcome any patch adding the output of static URLs like the GoogleMapsFormat does it already.

As an workaround, you might use the "Print" key to take a screenshot.
The Screenshot can be inserted into IrfanView or similar programs.
