Agreed, it depends on the intended use and the developers can have NO way of knowing that in advance. The fact they have ignored one entire segment just to fulfil their desire to show off their skills at incorporating fancy real time info. is not what development should be about. Apple got it right when they wrote "Consistency should be valued above idiosyncratic cleverness". I wouldn't suggest Apple still abide by that, but it should be at the forefront of every developer's mind. This sort of carry on by mapping developers is a clear case of trying to show off with their 'idiosyncratic cleverness' while actually making the product worse for a large proportion of their potential users. I say potential since this stupidity ensures many of us cannot use the product. So what's the point of trying to be clever and losing customers. It's madness, but symptomatic of what's wrong with so much development these days.
Of course if they were actually good at their job they would include an option to turn this feature on and off at will. Or allow you to include routing dates that would therefore determine how the routes were chosen. Ensure EVERYONE can plan the routes they require. This really is not rocket science, just common sense. Obviously completely lacking in this case.
I tried Route Converter's Off-line edition. Unfortunately it was hopeless. I never saw a complete map that didn't have about 50% simply missing, displaying just blank spaces. Impossible to plan anything. Sorry, sounded like possibly a good option.
I just find it extraordinary that in this day and age, with the technology available to us, it is impossible to plan a summer route, during the winter. Quite extraordinary.
