I do not think you're doing anything stupid.
The reason that your previous version no longer works is Google.
Since several weeks, the Google services work only if there is a valid API key.
The way an API key can be generated is described very well in the FAQ of the
Route-Converter web site.
If you do not want to give your credit card details to Google,
you'll have to use the offline version.
In the offline-version (opensource-version) you'll have
lot's of online-functions but all without Google.
