How to create a User POI file for IGO8 as per an ASUS R300
#1
user.rar contains a user.poi file that works in my ASUS R300 in the flashram. Specifically it is placed in the Flashdisk\Navi\Save directory as user.poi. The rar file also contains the poi_visibilities.txt file, which tells the unit which symbol to use for the user created POI folder[s], and the distance to use for seeing them on the map display. The third file is the set of rules that are used to create the user.poi file. The file has to be in UFT16 format, while the visibilities file is in UFT8 format. So the user.poi file starts with FF FE and after that is set up the notepad editor in Windows automatically handles the file as UTF16.

RouteConverter could create a user.poi file by automatically using "RC created" as the name for the user.poi folder [Field 2], and putting the address as downloaded in field 13 in the lost, the lat and long in fields 5 and 6, and, based on the location, the correct values in fields 7 and 8. That would make it easier for a user to complete the data for an item, in theory. I am not certain that RC can correctly parse the description field when it is something like 2-98 Ohr Menachem Way, Vaughan, ON, Canada although that gives _c** for Field 7 [Canada] and _con for Field 8 [Ontario] so a lot of the work is done. The user could then edit the file to change the name of the POI to his/her desired name, put in the precise address, and pop the user.poi file into the unit in the correct place.

Completely up to Christian as to whether or not this feature is made available, as I know how to take a track and select points to change into a waypoint list, by editing the resulting qpx file <grin>

The current 1.29.24 version does not produce a user.poi file that can be used in an ASUS R300 or R700, or in IGO8. I know this format CAN be used in the ASUS units, and likely can be used in other units running IGO8... but the only way to know is to try it in your unit. If you have the MIO hack and can get to the Flashdisk, feel free to test with the user.poi file I have included. You can edit it using the notepad editor in windows to a location or two in your country, since I suspect the basics remain the same and the difference in fields 7, 8 and 9 will be obvious if you manually create one POI as a user.poi and download the file to your machine, and look at it.

A few questions:

Quote:The only fields that MUST have values are 1 to 8

Unfortunately, the information for two fields does not exist:

Quote:7. Country and state poi file in system
8. Country and state for the point of interest

Can they be left empty or filled with a fixed value? Like

Quote:4. Type of POI - use Parking and change it later

Quote:The file is put into FlashDisk\Navi\Save directory in a 'hacked' ASUS R300 using the Mio hack, and then it works perfectly.

Which software does the R300 use? And what is hacked there? How many users hack their devices?

If you can determine that the location is geographically in North America you can use _c** or _u** and let the user fix the record. The real question is where the lat and long are. If you can determine that you can fill in the rest, but the user always can look at the map and fill in the correct values based on that. From my point of view always use _c** and let me fix them.

The ASUS R300 uses custom software written by ASUS and likely the ASUS R700 uses the same software, the only difference being the screen size. The Mio Hack is available to all users and is used in Europe. As for North America, I could not say, since most of North America seems to be Garmin and Tom Tom crazy. However if you do a quick search for Mio Hack of ASUS it shows up immediately, and is kept current.

The problem with the unhacked unit is that there is no way into the Flash memory, and the concept of using KLM files does not seem to work if you put them on the microSD card. You can manually add all the user poi data you want one at a time via the touch screen, but that is a real tedious pain in the rump.
