I have (had :-) ) the same problem.

Windows 8
Java brand new install

No joy. Tried everything that was relevant in 'What can I do when I cannot see the map?' - no change.

Fiddled... and eventually tried the 32bit version. Success!

The problem was Oracle decided without telling me that they would install the 32bit version of Java on my 64bit OS. Thanks.
