function of creating gpx traces

what exactly is the function of creating gpx traces? Please explain.

This is an example below from another web site (but works the same way that the previous link)

In the example below, when you choose the tool that looks like a pen, you can draw a trace (in red). Every click creates a gps coordinates. Then you can save to create a trace.

There are other tools to delete, move the trace
