It's straight forward as HGT is NASA's standard format for the SRTM dataset:

Not for Europe, only USA in 1" arc

SRTM elevation data in other formats is converted from NASA data.
As one of several alternatives for Europe you have:

Not so good, it is first release of SRTM1, no void-filled

This one contain SRTM1 Global version 3, void-filled in HGT format :

At least Global Mapper can also write HGT files.

You're invited to develop it and submit a pull request ;-)

I'm not Java developer, sorry... ;-)

Btw, I've never heard of these formats. Can you provide technical specs and download locations for it?

I was talking about free softwares, like QGIS, Global Mapper is (too) expensive...
