Can't Open URL filetype

I'm trying to use this program for the 1st time. I start with creating a route with googlemaps. Paste the link onto notepad; whenever I save the file with filetype as URL, windows thinks it is a shortcut. Running windows XP

How do I get around this problem? Thanks.
