Suggestion for evolution

Hi Christian,

Exporting maps :

In the home page of http://www.openstreetmap.org/ there is a thumbnail "Export"

Cliquing on it offers the possiblity to select the area, and the format. For the "Image Mapnik" format, in "Options" the pull down menu offer various formats including SVG.

I did a downlmoad of a small area as an SVG file. I succeded in open it with Inkscape, even if the file is big, and I had to be be patient.
Inkscape is an Open Source vector graphics editor. Refer to : http://inkscape.org/

More information about export is here : http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Export

In the other hand, I did test to upload a track, I didn't succeded and finaly found this post in the forum.
The topic is : Can not see the GPS track

Refer to the thread : http://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/...-gps-track

It is stated :
"... Bear in mind that OSM is a place for creating an objective, accurate map of the world, not for showcasing your own particular favourite routes...."

So, I went to the conclusion I can't get an svg file including the map and my track.

The API

Regarding the possibilities of the API, I should say I am a common user and I am not able to understand the possibilities and the limits of an API, neither how to use it.

Googling OSM site gives this page : http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/API_v...d_Overview
in which there is an "export" item.

For sure it is possible to download the map as an SVG, and draw the track over the map using Inkscape. But if I can upload the track (RouteConverter do it) and then download the map plus the track I get the incredible advantage of NO possibility to do mistakes while drawing the track. Plus a interesting reduction of the effort to get the result.

The objective is to end with a paper copy of the track over the map, and to distribute it under Creative Commons licence.

Best regards.
Bernard.
